History of Backbone Mountain:
When the owner first bought this property he was told of a battle that had taken place on the north side of Devils Backbone Mountain adjacent to the property as well as the fact that there was a civil war road that had been built to transport artillery and troops across the mountian from Waldron to Fort Smith.
The owner found the road on the property and began the process of clearing it all the way to the top where it crosses in a saddle along the ridge. An area was cleared just to the west of where it crosses and a swing was palced there for a wonderful view to the southern mountians.
Several artifacts, horse shoes and wagon parts have been found, as well as a cannon ball in the field which is now in a museum.
The old road starts at the red gate entrance and goes north through the trees bending to the west and up the mountain.
There is a man made rock fence that follows the entire property at the top of the ridge.
