Texas Land

The Lone Star State encompasses 171 million acres, just over 268,597 square miles. Texas is located in the South Central region of the United States and shares borders with the Gulf of Mexico, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mexico.

Texas’s name derives from a Caddo Indian word meaning “friends” or “allies,” which incorporates the state motto: Friendship. Texas became the 28th state of the union in 1845.

It’s nicknamed the Lone Star State in honor of the Texas flag and was adopted after Texas became independent from Mexico in 1836. The state flower is the Bluebonnet which has the shape of the petals on the flower resembling the bonnet worn by pioneer women to shield them from the sun.

The state bird is the Northern Mockingbird.

The state is made up of 254 counties. Austin is the state capital, and Houston is the largest city. San Antonio, in the south-central area, is the second largest.
